“This program encourages saving energy and water in commercial buildings and that makes good business sense for many reasons, including saving money while helping the environment. Building owners have been focusing on energy savings for many years, because energy represents the single largest controllable operating expense for office buildings.”
- Jeannie Bernard, Executive Vice President, Denver Metro BOMA

"With commercial buildings accounting for 18 percent of total U.S. energy use, programs that encourage and reward conservation efforts can have a major impact."
- Tami Door, President & CEO, Downtown Denver Partnership

"This program will make a significant positive impact on Denver's carbon reduction goals."
- Michele Weingarden, Greenprint Denver

Award Categories

One office building and one hotel will be recognized in each of three categories:

Super Saver — a jury awarded recognition for superior achievement in energy and water management, overcoming unique obstacles and emphasizing efficiency through no- and low-cost practices.

Greatest Improvement in Efficiency — recognizing the greatest percentage gain in energy and water performance ratings* from the baseline year to the comparative year (a two-year period).

Most Efficient Building — recognizing the overall highest energy and water performance rating* at the end of the comparative year.

* performance ratings will be based on a use per square foot measurement

How it Works

Participating buildings will use the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool to share energy and water use with the Watts To Water program. ENERGY STAR experts will be available to help any participant with this process.

A benchmark year is set - in the case of this inaugural round, that year is 2008 - and a subsequent year's data is compared against the benchmark year to determine which properties will be awarded recognition in three different categories.

Why Participate?

All participants will gain benefits and recognition from the program:

  • Press release announcing all participating buildings
  • Listing on the Watts To Water website
  • Additional media coverage and public exposure as the program develops
  • Free technical support from ENERGY STAR technicians
  • Free online review of benchmarking data
  • Unbiased ranking of their building’s energy efficiency with a private report detailing overall market ranking
  • Opportunity to attend educational workshops and learn how to cut consumption even further
